Even as parking is an issue of concern in the city, the proposal for construction of a parking lot in Industrial Area Phase II has been stuck in the pipeline for the past several months.
One of the reasons is that some parts of the land have been encroached upon by scrap dealers.
Communication regarding construction of a parking lot in Industrial Area Phase II was exchanged between the office of the UT Chief Architect and Chief Engineer, MC. The site plan of the same was also prepared. However, the presence of scrap dealers is proving to be a hindrance.
The authorities have been unable to deal with the problem of scrap dealers over the past several years. A number of vacant plots in both phases of Industrial Area have been encroached upon by the scrap dealers. The parking lot is proposed to come up in an area of 2.64 acres.
Area councillor Davesh Moudgil says, "The proposal was mooted several months ago and there has been no progress since then. At some places, scrap dealers have encroached on the land, while at others the owners of the industrial plots have taken over some portion adjoining to their plots. The officials will need to take action for expediting the proposal."
He added, "There is no connectivity in different lanes of the Industrial Area. The trucks that enter the lanes for delivery of goods cannot be reversed easily. I have proposed that adjoining lanes be connected so that the heavy vehicles that enter from one lane come out of the other. This would be convenient for those working in the area."
Parking woes are being felt across the city with the number of vehicles increasing at a rapid pace. With the city being landlocked there is a lack of additional space for parking of the vehicles.
