Industrial belt hit again, this time by pipeline burst

As many as 3,500 industrial consumers from the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt were hit after a pipeline burst at Nigdi on Tuesday morning.

As many as 3,500 industrial consumers from the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt were hit after a pipeline burst at Nigdi on Tuesday morning. The industrial town of 15 lakh had gone without water on Monday morning after a power failure at the Ravet pumping station.

H D Sonawane, executive engineer of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC),said the air valve of a pipeline at Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi had a problem. “The ball in the air valve got stuck resulting in water fountains. We got the information about minutes after the incident. We reached the spot and repair work began in about an hour,” Sonawane said. MIDC lifts 120 mld water from Pavana river and supplies it to its 3,500 industrial consumers in the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt.

Officials said water supply to industries was affected for at least two hours. Vendors in the nearby area said fountains with full pressure rose to several metres and for a good one hour the place became a picnic spot. Though the fault at Nigdi was repaired promptly, activists point out that there are several spots in the industrial town where pipeline bursts are common. Chetan Kachi,a civic activist, said in Nashik Phata a pipeline had been leaking for nearly three months. “It was repaired only after we threatened to hold an agitation. In the meantime, thousands of litres of water went down the drain. Who is responsible for this kind of waste,” said Kachi.

Former mayor R S Kumar said the PCMC has made no alternative provision for ensuring water supply if the MSEDCL power supply fails. Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma said the PCMC would install generators or express feeders where necessary. “Installing 22,000 KV generators at Ravet pumping station would be a tall order. We will require huge and costly generators at Ravet pumping station which is not a practical idea,” he said. The PCMC lifts 340 mld water from Pavana river and supplies it to domestic and industrial consumers.
