Members of United Cycle Parts and Manufacturers’ Association (UCPMA) and few other associations observed a hunger strike on Monday to protest against powercuts being imposed by Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB).

The members stated that PSEB at present is imposing an 8 hour cut on daily basis and demanded it be reduced to four hours in the mixed feeders. The protestors suggested the powercut timings be fixed from 7 am to 9 am and further from 1 pm to 3pm.

It was also said that if the situation does not improve within 10 days, the members will hold protests and gherao the PSEB chief engineer and other officers.

“During the election campaign, the chief minister had promised us that we will not face power shortage in the paddy season, but this year’s we have seen the worst,” said Pardeep Wadhawan,a member of UCPMA.

While PSEB officials maintained that the power situation is grim and the industry should co-operate,the industrialists said they were not willing to suffer at the cost of free power being provided to the farm sector. Charanjit Singh Vishvkarma,Inderjit Singh Navyug,Pardeep Wadhawan,Achru Ram Gupta,Ajit Kumar and Rajinder Singh Pappu were among those who sat on hunger strike.
