Industries go slow on govt’s green belt advice

Despite repeated reminders by the state government to utilise open spaces to plant trees, industrial estates across central Gujarat have hardly taken any steps in this regard. The government had sent a circular in 2008 to utilise the open spaces to plant trees and increase the green cover.

The Gujarat government had sent a circular last year to all industrial estates asking them to start growing trees by carving out a green belt. The government had also asked the industrial estates to form their own green societies in the estates and utilise the unused spaces for growing trees. Many industrial estates have already formed the green societies, but not much work has been done when it comes to covering the vacant spaces with trees.

The original idea was to form green societies in each industrial estate.

N K Patel,Chief Engineer,Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) said: “Each industrial estate was supposed to form a green society, consisting of their members, for the purpose of planting trees. Some industrial estates have done it,but many are yet to do it.”

One of the most developed industrial regions,Nandesari, infamous for its water and air pollution, has now put in effort to have a green belt in its industrial estates. The Nandesari Industrial Association (NIA) and Federation of Industries and Associations (FIA) president Babubhai Patel said they were in the process of acquiring land for the purpose.

“We have got a couple of acres of land at Nandesari industrial estate. We have signed an MoU with the government that the land will be utilised for no other purpose but for planting trees. But there is a clause that the government will take the land whenever it requires,” he said. Patel has plans to plant around 3,000 trees on the available land.

The Makarpura Industrial Estate too has begun the process, but is yet to make any progress for acquiring land for tree plantation.
