As the monsoon nears, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to ensure that no untoward incidents occur. The civic body has appealed to citizens to inform them about trees that could cause danger so that the authorities can cut the branches accordingly.
We have taken up cutting of branches that may cause inconvenience during the monsoon. The Bombay High Court has orally directed us to not permit cutting of trees, but no restrictions on cutting branches that can be dangerous in monsoon, said PMC tree officer Balasaheb Jagzap.
The division bench of Justice J H Bhatia and and Justice M R Bhatkar orally conveyed the PMC on May 27 that it can cut branches of trees that are dangerous, said PMC legal advisor Bhagyashree Alhate. Accordingly we have appealed the citizens to inform us about trees that are possible threats,Jagzap said adding the high court would hear the application on seeking permission to cut trees on June 10.
Meanwhile, petitioner Deepak Vahikar, who had filed an application in the court highlighting the increase in number of trees being cut in the city, said that the PMC is wrongly claiming that the court has allowed them to cut branches of the trees.
Activist Vinod Jain said that the civic body should not take advantage of the court relaxation on cutting the branches. The branches should not be cut randomly. A committee should be appointed to take a decision on cutting of branches and a detailed report should be prepared.
