The Samajwadi Party on Saturday demanded a judicial probe into the Jamia Nagar encounter that followed after the serial blasts in the national capital and threatened it will rethink on its support to the UPA government if the probe proves that those arrested in the case are innocent.

Party general secretary Amar Singh said the Samajwadi Party wanted a judicial probe into the Jamia Nagar encounter, in which two suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists were killed on September 19, and unravel the truth behind the incident.

Singh said he would suggest Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to ‘resign on moral grounds’ till the judicial inquiry is over.

"Our party supported the government due to pressure from the minorities to keep the BJP at bay. If the judicial probe proves that those arrested in connection with the serial blasts are innocent, then we will have to rethink on the support to the UPA," Singh said.

His comments came after his visit to Batla House where the encounter took place in which Delhi police official Mohan Chand Sharma also died.

Five suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists were arrested by Delhi police on September 19 and 21.

Five near simultaneous blasts have rocked the national capital on September 13, killing 25 people and leaving about 100 injured.

Police have claimed that a 13-member module of the Indian Mujahideen was behind the blasts in the capital and those in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Gorakhpur and Varanasi.

Getting political mileage!By: Ramesh K. | 04-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward Amar Singh and his Samajawadi Party are known for their soft corner for Muslim community, and this should be respected. However, when he starts challenging the authorities over a matter of terrorism, this is like getting a political mileage after the death of scores of innocent people.

our politicians......By: anonymous indian | 04-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward Judicial probe into the Jamia encounter and no probe which blames the minority community will be acceptable! The probe must find the majority guilty at all costs to be acceptable.Lest I be misunderstood,I realise we live in a secular democracy and it might be entirely possible that those arrested might be innocent, but the way Amar Singh has asked for the probe reeks of double standards. He is only demoralising our police forces.I must ask the police force to redouble their vigour in solving the case and bringing the culprits to book whichever religion they might belong to.This dirty business has gone far enough and some action is required. The way terror acts occur so frequently, I feel very soon we might run out of judges to conduct 'judicial probes' as demanded by our cunning politicians.
