Injured constable dies

Delhi Police constable Subhash Tomar, who had suffered serious injuries in Sunday's protests at India Gate and was on ventilator support, died on Tuesday at around 6.20 am. Following the death of the 46-year-old, the police have added the murder charge to the FIR registered in connection with the protests.

The FIR initially charged unknown accused with rioting, damage to public property and attempt to murder. While eight have been arrested so far on charges of rioting, the murder complaint has been filed against unknown persons.

Police said Tomar had been assaulted and kicked by the protesters and received injuries on his neck, chest and stomach. The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post mortem examination.

Tomar was cremated with full state honours in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, union minister Ajit Singh, Minister of State (Home) R P N Singh and Home Secretary R K Singh, apart from Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and other top police officials. Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta was also present.

A native of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, the constable is survived by his wife and three children. He was the only earning member of the family. Police Commissioner Kumar said they would appoint a member of his family in the police force on compassionate grounds.

The Delhi Police announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for Tomar's family. Every police personnel will also donate one day's salary to the family. The Union Home Ministry also announced an immediate ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh.

Tomar's wife and children will also get all the benefits due to those who die in the line of duty and receive his full pay till the time he would have retired.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said he was "deeply grieved" and that his prayers were with Tomar's family.
