Forty-three-year-old Viral Dholakia who died while protesting against water cuts last week, had external injuries on his body, according to the forensic experts at the JJ Hospital who conducted post mortem.

The preliminary report by the forensic experts stated that Dholakia — member of Swabhiman,an organisation led by Narayan Rane’s son Nitesh— had a visible swelling on his left thigh. However, the experts have reserved their opinion on the cause of death. The report was handed over to the victim’s family. “Organ samples of Dholakia were sent to pathology department in the hospital and forensic laboratory in Kalina,” said a source at JJ Hospital.

Meanwhile,Additional Commissioner of Police,South Region,K Padmanabhan said that the lathicharge could not have been the cause of Dholakia’s death and stressed that the preliminary post mortem report supports the claim.

“The post mortem report mentions that he had a small contusion on his thigh and the doctors of GT Hospital also told us that they had treated him for cardiac arrest and not external injuries. The final post mortem report findings will clear the cause of death. No action has been taken against any officer yet,” Padmanabhan added.

Hundreds of protesters demonstrated outside Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s headquarter in south Mumbai last week and tried to barge into the civic body’s office. Police resorted to lathicharge following which many were injured and were rushed to G T Hospital and Bombay Hospital.
