  • Several incidents of car snatching have been reported in the city in recent times. While two incidents of car snatching at gunpoint were reported in two different areas under the jurisdiction of Model Town and Sadar police stations in the last week of June and first week of July, a similar case was reported in May as well.

Three unidentified armed robbers had snatched the car from a couple at gunpoint from Model Town area early morning on July 4. The victims, local businessman Rakesh Puri (55) and his wife Geeta Puri, were on their way back home after meeting their daughter and son-in-law in Basant Avenue in Dugri, when the incident occurred near Marriot Hotel.

Prior to this, in the last week of June, some armed persons had snatched the car of one Manjit Singhi from Dugri Phase II under Sadar police station after stabbing him. That incident too occurred late in the night.

In both these cases, the police had registered FIRs against unidentified persons and had started investigation. But there has been no breakthrough in both the cases so far.

Earlier on May 30, local businessman Naveen Aggarwal had been shot at by some masked men. Aggarwal had a providential escape as the bullet brushed past him. That incident, which occurred near the Dugri Bridge of the Sidhwan Canal, also occurred late night when Aggarwal was returning home. He, however, managed to save both his life and his car as he sped away.

About the July 4 and May 30 incidents, Model Town SHO Beant Kumar Juneja said it was very unlikely that both these incidents were the handiwork of the same people. He said Aggarwal probably had been attacked due to some personal enmity. About the July 4 incident, Juneja said that the police have prepared sketches of the robbers and are trying hard to solve the cases.
