In recognition of the excellence achieved by Deccan College both in teaching and research, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, awarded it the status of a deemed university in March 1990. Since it started functioning as deemed university from June 1, 1994, the institute has conducted its own courses for MA and PG Diploma in Archaeology and MA in Linguistics besides enrolling a large number of students pursuing PhD in these disciplines.
