Pune-based wildlife photographer Kunjbhai Trivedi’s maiden exhibition is all about sharing the strong bond that he has with animals

Imagine if one had to select 90 odd pictures for an exhibition from a reservoir of over two lakh! Welcome to the world of intrepid photographer Kunjbhai Trivedi, who has been into wildlife photography for over 50 years now. Born in Tanzania, the shutter bug bit him when he visited the Serengeti National Park as a teenager in 1945. And from then on it has been a journey that has spanned across 5 continents, covering wildlife reserves in over 15 countries. In the pipeline is a visit to Antarctica this November. “Wildlife photography is all about patience. You may have to trek and wait for hours to even catch a glimpse of an animal. But when you do,it’s all worth it”,says the 79-year-old,adding,“ This is the first time I am exhibiting my photographs. I was prodded into it by my friends and family members. Exhibitions are a lot of effort. I have professionals looking into every detail of the event.”

His passion for the wild has traversed a long road, living beyond his busy professional period as a chartered accountant and looking after the family business in Pune,to now, when having withdrawn from work,he has more time and space to exercise his skill. Trivedi started out with a modest Kodak folding camera and has since then used all models of cameras from the Canon stable. “I have tried them all. I have lost count as to how many.” Trivedi further clarifies ,“The exhibition is about sharing the strong bond and sentiments that I feel towards the animals I love. I have encouraged school kids to attend the exhibition. As they are young and impressionable, and could likely become tomorrow’s saviours of the environment.” When asked if there was enough being done to save the environment,he was a tad skeptical; “There is very little political will to save the animals. There is a lot of talk, but I am not sure of the commitment. I take pictures because it is my passion,I am not an activist. However,if my pictures enable an increase in the the level of awareness among people, then I will be happy to participate in the efforts to preserve the environment.”

Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh is his favourite spot to photograph his muse, the tiger. Leopards come in second in the favourites list. Apart from clicking pictures,he keeps himself abreast with all the latest technological advancements in photography and regularly browses through online tutorials and attends international photography workshops. So,how does he acclimatise himself to the harsh conditions in places like Antarctica? “Well, its all about the clothing”,he replies cheekily.

(Kunj Trivedi’s exhibition will be on from June 19-24 at the Jehangir Art Gallery,Mumbai)
