  • “Educating the masses is the only solution to check the growing number of AIDS patients.”

This was stated by Atul Gupta, member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Chandigarh Council and chief executive officer, Red Alkemi, while addressing an Infotainment Session on “Global Crisis — Local Action” organised by the CII on Friday.

The objective of the session was to spread awareness on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) at the workplace, reduce stigma and discrimination and encourage blood donation.

Discussing CII’s initiatives in the area, Gupta added that the Confederation of Indian Industry has taken on the mandate of catalysing the involvement of industries in India’s social development agenda, particularly regarding AIDS.

Dr Suvir Saxena, deputy director, Blood Safety- State AIDS Control Society, said the focus is to galvanise awareness and support of the industry towards the issue.

Breaking the myth on blood donation, Dr Saxena said, “It is actually beneficial for the donor as new cells are formed after donation, which have better efficiency. There is no chance of acquiring any infection as single use needles attached to the blood bag are used.”

A film based on the myths and misconceptions related to AIDS was also screened.
