IPS association breaks silence,backs Bhatt

The Gujarat IPS Officers’ Association on Saturday held an impromptu meeting where they extended support to arrested officer Sanjiv Bhatt and his family.

The Gujarat IPS Officers’ Association on Saturday held an impromptu meeting where they extended support to arrested officer Sanjiv Bhatt and his family. Three of Bhatt’s batchmates later visited his house,on behalf of the association.

The association,which is virtually defunct,so far had kept quiet over the Narendra Modi government’s chargesheets against DIGs Rahul Sharma and Sanjiv Bhatt. It didn’t even speak up when its president,Additional DGP Kuldip Sharma,one of the officers who has taken on the Modi government,was sidelined as Managing Director of Gujarat Sheep and Wool Corporation,a post meant for a bureaucrat. Sharma had been due to be appointed as DGP.

Instead,the association had extended support to families of IPS officers

D G Vanzara,Rajkumar Pandian and Abhay Chudasama,all accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

On Saturday,the association members had actually gathered in Ahmedabad for the wedding of Additional DGP K Nityanandan’s daughter in Ahmedabad. With officers from across the state present,a decision was taken to hold an association meeting to discuss Bhatt’s arrest.

At least 35 officers backed the resolution appointing Additional DGP Deepak Swaroop as the president of the association and extending support to Bhatt’s family.

Bhatt’s batchmates IGPs Atul Karwal,V M Pargi and Pravin Sinha spent at least an hour with his family at his residence later. “They came to express solidarity with Sanjiv,” his wife Shweta said.

As per rule,the seniormost DGP after the state police chief is elected the association president. However,the Modi government has not promoted a single officer as DGP.
