Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?

Obama is being criticised for making demands of Netanyahu that he should have known would never be met.

Five months after Barack Obama went to Cairo and persuaded most of the Arab world, in a ringing declaration of even-handedness, that he would face down Israel in his quest for a Palestinian state, American policy seems to have run into the sand. The American president’s mediating hand is weaker, his charisma damagingly faded. From the Palestinian and Arab point of view, his administration-after grandly setting out to force the Jewish state to stop the building of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land as an early token of good faith, intended to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to negotiation-has meekly capitulated to Israel.

The upshot is that hopes for an early resumption of talks between the main protagonists seem to have been dashed. Indeed, no one seems to know how they can be restarted. The mood among moderates on both sides is as glum as ever.

Mr Obama’s secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, made matters worse by actually praising Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for promising merely to “restrain” Israel’s building rather than stop it altogether, as he was first asked to do. Previously Mrs Clinton had insisted that stop meant stop. There should be no “organic growth” of existing settlements and no exceptions for projects under way. Nor did she specifically exempt East Jerusalem, which Palestinians view as their future capital but which many Israelis see as theirs alone. And she had earlier castigated Israel for demolishing Palestinian houses in the city’s eastern part. Now, in Israel on October 31st, she changed her tune, seeming to acquiesce in Mr Netanyahu’s refusal to meet those earlier American demands and congratulating the prime minister on his “unprecedented” offer to build at a slower rate than before.

Stop the aid, moron, see what happensBy: Haym | 17-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward American aid to Israel (which is 75% subsidy for our own military industries and therefore regarded in Congress as pork and not foreign aid - that's why it always sails through, not because some nefarious "lobby") is an effective tool which gives Washington powers to control and restraint Jerusalem. Without it things would get very bad very fast.
Is Israel too strong for Barack Obama?By: Mike Pumphry | 16-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Obama can solve the problem in just one day. Stop the aid to Israel. 15 billion dollars are being looted from American treasury every year. Why should we pay to a foreign country while we are suffering in the United States. Thousands of Jewish people, who own businesses here, who make billions here, and then their loyalty remains to a foreign country. What bothers me is that Jewish people migrated from Europe, prospered here, never put foot on Israel and still love Israel more than America. Most of our war funding which is exceeding to trillions now is to protect the offensive interest of Israel, not Israel itself. How can we tell Iran not to have nukes while looking away when Israel holds 300 nukes. No wonder, the world is calling us hypocrites. The whole NPT in tatters because we have double standard on the issue of nuclear energy and power. If India is interested to stop militancy threat, then it should force Israel to accept peace.
Jews Vs ArabsBy: Hero Vaz | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Obama has failed to pacify or win over the Muslims or the Arabs. He has also failed to control or discipline the Israelis. The only alternative now left for him is to stay out of the Israeli-Arab conflict and let them settle their own differences and disputes. That should redeem the US's reputation to a large extent and reduce the hatred of the Muslims towards the Americans. It is said in the Bible that Israel will be surrounded by its enemies who will extinguish the Jewish State and that will mark the beginning of the rapid end of the world. Israel already has its enemies around it and these enemies will get the strength they need to attack Israel, with the help of Iran, Pakistan and other Muslim countries. If this is not to happen anytime soon, the UN will have to take a strong hand, honestly, and see that the Israelis return the Arab lands to the Arabs and, at the same time, guaranty the security of Israel. Then, perhaps, some later development will bring about the end of Israel!!!
To Abraham MexiBy: Jaffer | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Hello Mr. Abraham, all Islamic countries are against the Terrorists. Saudi, Pakistan, Yemen etc are fighting against terrorists. Your thought about Israel as the first line defense is ridiculous. They could not even face the home made rockets from Palestinians/Hamas, they were given a fitting reply by hezbollah in the last Lebonan war. The myth of Israel is gone after 1973 Yom Kippur war.
Foul PakisBy: Hero Vaz | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Jaffer, you must know that Pakistan is fighting against all terrorists except those it created and is supporting to strike against India. Don't think the devlish, two-faced Pakis are saints. They are the most foul Muslims on the face of the earth.
Who stopped ObamaBy: Anatoli | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Was it Israel or Israeli lobby that stopped Obama? If this is the lobby, they should know better that peace with Arabs can be achieved by sacrifices. The offer of peace was genuine, the Israelis didn't take it. Too bad. Obama is too weak. If he is not ready to crash some heads, apply real pressure on Israel, he should been quiet.
