ISRO is trying to make use of European aerospace giant Arianespace to get launch opportunities from Europe.

Indian Space Research Organisation has reached an understanding with Arianespace under which the European space consortium would scout for small satellites in Europe to be launched by ISRO.

ISRO is a long-time customer of the European aerospace giant, which has launched 12 Indian satellites from 1988 to 2007. Another heavy Indian satellite in the present series is expected to be launched by Arianespace, but the date has not yet been finalised, ISRO Chairman, G Madhavan Nair said.

Asked if the association with Arianespace would come to an end after the next launch, he said, "No, actually, we are trying to develop it further. They are good for heavy-lift launches. Whenever we have payloads of more than four tonnes, we may have to depend on them".

At the same time, Nair said ISRO is trying to make use of Arianespace to get launch opportunities from Europe.

"Arianspace will work like a collaborative agency with us in Europe. It is in dialogue with many institutions in Europe. We may get more launch opportunities through them. So, partnership with Arianespace will be strengthened", Nair said.

"They are not interested in small satellites so they will deflect it to us", he added.

In addition, Nair said ISRO expects more launch opportunities from the US and Europe following the recent technology safeguards agreement (TSA) with America.

"Technology safeguards agreement talks about spacecraft launch of either US origin or from the components which are used in the spacecraft by Europeans and others. So, they will get clearance for launching from (India's) GSLV and so on", Nair said.

TECHNOLOGYBy: NIRANJAN | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward INSTEAD OF SPENDING MONDY ON TECHNOLOGY IN SPACE, WHY NOT TRY TO FIND POTABLE WATER AND IMPROVE AGRICULTURE ON LAND. OUR PROBLEMS ARE NOT GOING TO BE SOLVED IF WE LAND A MAN ON THE MOON AND FIND TRILLIONS OF GALLONS OF WATER THERE! SEND THE SCIENTISTS TO THE GRASS ROOT LEVEL IN THE VILLAGES TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS OF THE AAM AADMI AND TRY TO SOLVE THEM AND HELP THEM. WE ARE TRYING TO ACT AS A FIRST WORLD COUNTRY IN SPENDING MONEY IN SPACE EXPLORATION WHILE BEING A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, WHERE PEOPLE ARE DYING FOR WATER AND FOOD!
read it againBy: chad | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward ISRO is making money out of these launches!!we also need satellites for protection of our land from countries like china n pak to keep watch on them.we have ample amount of scientist to work on agriculture and irrigation.but if people like u elect politician like current one or worst do not vote at all then agricultural problem will not be solved.why we people always criticize non-agricultural achievements of our people?!it is certainly not at the cost of land and water problem.ISRO is making money out of it which can be utilized by govt. to finance various projects.
pathetic attitude of indiansBy: Raj Thackrey | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Instead of launching satellites in space, what india needs is to launch a successfull drive to eradicate hunger and poverty. Instead of behaving like a developed country, it should invest in educating its people who are being contineously brain wahsed by cavemans like ramdevs and asarams.
@Raj ThackeryBy: krupa | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Raj Thackrey or whatever you are. First grow a couple of those things to post on the name that your dad gave you. May be then your steaming from your holes will make some sense.
Don't be jealousBy: Indo-Canadian | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward India launches rockets to the stars where as the Pakistanis launch their terrorists into heaven. Go clean up your own country you impostor.
pathetic attitude of indiansBy: sunitaanilreja | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward 50 % i am agree with raj thakre , plenty of monet are being used to devlop or launch satellites in space rather india has to invest 50 % of money spent on these sattelites are not need required as an poor country because inflation and devlopment programmes can vbe used road , health care and electricity for village and poor people residing in villages and small towns which is need of hour and top most priority of these people even educate them to bring in mainstream is also important but india is compell to devlop these sattelites to defend our country by neibours who are eying all the times on us . so india can not be projected as week or less technology available with us or our country . both are important at present condition how to balance both the priority is more important is matters . our scientists and educated and ex army personel and intelectual can have serious thought on both issues and come out with solutions-regarda-sunita anil reja, mumbai, india
I am not sure what heading to give here...By: Avinash Baranwal | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Seems, launching satellite is more difficult than making a satellite. Why not to concentrate on making basic technology than buying it from others to meet our fancy visions? We made nukes(hope it is true in reality) and still testing the missiles to deliver those...I am really not able to understand our vision and true might. The more we read, more irritated we come...Everywhere either we are failing or true success is on bought technology.
get off your drugsBy: krupa | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Stop smoking hash. May be then you will be able to understand what you are not understanding now.
Re: KrupaBy: Avinash Baranwal | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Krupa,I am not on hash. for you, stop dancing like a kid on a toffee. Even after so much time and much hyped IITs and softpower we are still at the begging queue for technology. What i wanted to say is that we MUST stop fancying and start building basics which in long run would save our millions and also make ourselves self sufficient. If you have a better understanding of the facts, do write them...I am ready to learn from others...and Stop using 1 liners. This will improve others understanding neither will make you appear more learned.
@AvinashBy: Krupa | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Avinash, I was responding to your questioning our nuclear capability and relevance of missile testing. The problem in India is not that we do not have potential. The problem is there are too many in this country (you NOT included :)) who think our achievements in space technology are a waste of money! Every time we send something into space these self-appointed intellectuals jump up and down and scream how the poor in the country are dying out because of the diverted money. These people ignore the fact that ISRO has actually stared making money by sending foreign objects into space. Your concern about we being still a beggar for high end technology is absolutely correct! But you should not forget that we only a 62 year old nation and scientific progress is something that does not come overnight. It will take decades of slow progress.. which is what is happening now. You do not reach a goal if you do not start moving towards it. I am only talking out against those people who do not want us to walk.
prof teggiBy: ramen | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward this is another typical indian preachy statement...ISRO has been doing evrything u hav mentioned...
ISRO Should concentrate On earth1By: Prof. M S Teggi | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward ISRO is one of the biggest setellite launching organization in the world. But this organization is concentrating to launch the setelliets which are just consuming the money needed to the common citizens of the country i.e big budget projects. This organization should concentrate in launching the setellites usfull to protect the damages from environmental problems than simply announcing the money consuming big launces. It should concentrate on projects to protect the damages due to environmental damages every year like floods, tsunami, etc.
