ISRO said Chandrayaan-1 moon mission has been called off as the space agency has lost radio contact with the craft.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said Chandrayaan-1 moon mission has been formally called off as the space agency has lost radio contact with the craft.

"We don't have contact with the spacecraft and we had to terminate the mission," ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair told reporters.

He, however, said the moon mission was a great success and 95 per cent of its objective was completed. "We could collect a large volume of data, including 70,000 images of the moon."

ISRO scientists, present along with Nair, said the spacecraft was hovering at 200 kms from the surface of the moon and it would take 1,000 days before it touches the lunar surface.

They said it was in discussion with the US and Russia to track the spacecraft.

Salute our scientists at ISRO-make the Mars mission a successBy: RR Iyer | 31-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Dr Madhavan Nair and fellow scientists at ISRO: The Indian nation stands solidly behind you in your sterling achievements despite temporary obstacles! We salute you! Keep up the great work- and make the Mars mission a great success. You are eminently capable of redoubling your efforts towards this great objective! Do not let the trash spewed by some of the ill-wishers of India bother you-they are from the usual suspects! God speed-the Force is truly with you and all fellow Indians! Thanks to Dr. Shanthakumar for his objective and timely comments-while this page is filled with hysterical comments from ill-wishers of India! Surely they are frustrated-let them stew!
Technology and SocietyBy: Virendra | 31-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I wouldn't say the mission and the monetary expenditure shouldn't have been taken at all. But yes when we have fundamental menaces in the society, it doesn't make sense to precede science. Though one may observe how much of their dear tax money goes into politicians and beaurocrats pockets and how much for genuine research work. Finally, it is true that technology can survive upto the the potential provided by society and vice versa. Right now, Indian society is reeling in pain and disasters.
failure is the step for success-do not be discouraged -you deserve supportBy: Dr.Shanthakumar | 31-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward All the scientists of ISRO have worked with dedication and partly chandrayana is successful !!!. A failure is always a step for success. During the childhood no man will walk straight without falling !!! It is with great effort, exercise he will learn to walk. TO ALL THE SCIENTISTS -DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED WITH BAD COMMENTS - KEEP GOING AHEAD -LET THE WORLD KNOW HOW WE CAN ACHIEVE. Comparatively, india has grown ahead in almost all the fronts as compared to any developed countries. SO WE MARCH ON WITH PRIDE
What is more important? By: Jay | 31-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Indian science and technology is going downhill since independence as per published reports in reputed journals. Our own scientists are admitting it (e.g: Balaram, P (2002): Science in India- Signs of Stagnation. Current Science 82, 193-194). What is more important for a country like India? Sending man or machine to moon or develop a vaccine against encephalitis which kills more than thousands almost every year? “India is doing great” is simply a sustained propaganda by few people who are benefitted by it. These people represent only a minute fraction of the population. In reality, in all parameters of development India is slipping down. Check India’s global standing in public health, hunger, malnutrition, infrastructure, governance (both transparency and efficiency), organized violence (including urban terrorism and naxal movement), education, and quality of research. The picture is not so rosy (as our politicians and some industrialists like us to believe) for any sensible Indian.
