The first Gurjjar agitation, led by Col Kirori Singh Bainsla, began on May 29, 2007 in Pipak Kheda in Dausa district. Hundreds of Gurjjars, demanding ST status, blocked the national highway to Delhi. The police resorted to firing on agitators in Dausa, Sawai Madhopur and Bharatpur, in which close to 30 Gurjjars were killed. The agitation came to an end after the formation of the Chopra committee to look into the proposal of granting the Gurjjars ST status and the announcement of special packages for Gurjjar dominated villages and areas.

Conflict between the state government and the Gurjjars reignited again on May 23, 2008 in Pilupura in Bharatpur when members of the Gurjjar community uprooted railway tracks. Following the death of a police constable while trying to control protestors, the state police again opened fire on the agitators killing 17. In the next two days, as protests spread across Gurjjar-dominated regions, another 24 Gurjjars were killed in separate incidents of police firing. The agitation came to an end when the state government agreed to convene a special assembly session and grant the Gurjjar community special reservation. The bill is awaiting approval from Rajasthan governor S K Singh.
