'The war fought against the LTTE was not a war fought against the Tamil people.'

As Sri Lanka staged an impressive military parade to mark its victory over the LTTE, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told his troops that it was now time to win over the hearts of the minority Tamils who should be able to live without "fear and mistrust".

"The war fought against the LTTE was not a war fought against the Tamil people. Our heroic troops sacrificed their lives to save the innocent Tamil people from the clutches of the LTTE," Rajapaksa said in his address to the 'Victory Day Parade' organised here to pay tributes to security forces following the "defeat of terrorism."

Rajapaksa, who spoke briefly in Tamil before reverting to Sinhala language, said the Sri Lankan armed forces astonished the world by their skills in war, discipline, efficiency and valour while taking on the Tiger rebels.

"We cannot forget the great service rendered by them. The victory we gained defeating the LTTE, is a victory for our entire land," he said.

"The war against the terrorists is now over. It is now the time to win over the hearts of the Tamil people. The Tamil speaking people should be protected," he said.

The Tamils should be able to live "without fear and mistrust," the President said. "That is today the responsibility of us all."

Prabhakaran is aliveBy: Sathishbabu | 04-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Tamils are son of soil in srilanka. Nobody can destroy Tamil people and Tamil culture. Because we are living in this world from very ancient period. Prabhakaran is alive. He will return soon and capture what he left. We 10 crores all around the world.
LTTE = terroristBy: Srini | 04-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward LTTE's biggest blunder was to kill Rajiv Gandhi. Agree or disagree with him, he was the elected leader of the country. By killing him, LTTE decided to wage war on the people of India. It is shameful that we did not directly pursue Prabhkaran and slaughter him (due to vote banks). The Sri Lanka Tamils should disavow LTTE and seek a non violent solution for equal status - only then should India step in.
Sinhalese nationalism will take its courseBy: Manish Sharma | 04-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward The president seems to forget why the tamils took up arms in the first place..Tamils were the subject of mass dicrimination, universities were dreams for tamils,'Sinhala only' rules to force the Sinhalese language upon Tamils, editing of history text books in schools, the burning of Jaffna library which housed ancient Tamil scriptures and the list goes on.The truth is that the majority (95%) of Tamils are supporters of the LTTE, they were the only force that stood up to generations of opression by succesive Sinhala nationalist governments. They stood up to the bullies. By defeating the LTTE militarily and having huge celebrations, this in it self is a negative sign to tamils as even rajapakse knows that the majority of Tamils are LTTE supporters and it is conveying a message that the sinhalese have defeated Tamils.Tamils have no voice anymore, no one to question actions by the government,Tamil place names in the north are already being changed,Sinhalese nationalism will take its course!
Prabakaran the Weak LeaderBy: BM | 04-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Prabakaran was right when he took arms to fight the Sinhalese for getting justice to the Tamils. He should have known that the solution was to sit and talk when he was equal to them but he took the war too far and lost. His biggest mistake was to kill Rajiv Gandhi and the biggest blunder was to show that he had the planes to attack . All the neighboring countries got scared because of the planes and got together to crush him. At last he had no friend , only enemies.
