Ajmal Ameer Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive during the 26/11 terror attacks, will be guarded round the clock by ITBP commandos to negate any threat to his life, top Mumbai Police officials today revealed.

“About 15 days ago,the Mumbai Police had requisitioned paramilitary forces for Kasab’s security. We had recommended the ITBP and two other forces,of which the state chose the ITBP and approached the Centre for the final nod. The approval has since been received from the Centre,” said a top police official, who did not wish to be named.

“The ITBP was chosen as its commandos are one of the best in the job. They will guard Kasab round the clock, and will augment security provided by the Mumbai Police with their expertise. The commandos will guard the cell in which Kasab is being kept, and will ensure his safety throughout the 26/11 trial,” said the officer.

At a press conference today, state home minister Jayant Patil confirmed that the Mumbai Police had been coordinating with the Centre to ensure the deployment of NSG or an equivalent force for Kasab’s protection.

Kasab is in solitary confinement inside the Arthur Road Jail, right next to the special court in which the trial is expected to begin on March 9. Security has been stepped up to an unprecedented level. There are threat perceptions from outside as well as within the jail with fears that people from the underworld might be used to eliminate Kasab.
