Its official: All major health indicators show negative growth

The Indian health sector fared poorly in 2008-09 with all major development indicators showing negative growth,suggesting that the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) failed to make the desired impact.

The Indian health sector fared poorly in 2008-09 with all major development indicators showing negative growth,suggesting that the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) failed to make the desired impact.

According to data posted on the NRHM health management information system,indicators such as immunisation,maternal health,even family planning have shown negative growth compared to 2008-07. The NRHM is supposed to make health care more accessible,improve immunisation rates,antenatal care and provide easy access to family planning methods. In most cases,the government was not able to achieve the assessed target for the year. The data is derived from performance statistics provided by the ministry.

IMMUNISATION

Polio: Compared to 2007-08,minus 3.9% children were immunised. This was 87.1% of the assessed need.

DPT: The rate was minus 6.1%. This was 84% of assessed need.

Tetanus Toxoid: Rate was down to minus 28.3% just 24 .9% of assessed children.

Measles: Minus 2.6% compared to the previous year 86% of assessed need.

BCG: Around minus 4.6%. This was 94% of assessed need.

ANTENATAL CARE

 Antenatal check-ups increased 6.7%,the only positive performance indicator.

 Domestic aided deliveries reduced by 4% compared to 2007-08. Deliveries were only 17% of assessed need.

 Institutional deliveries: Minus 29% deliveries in institutions compared to 2007-08.

 Tetanus for expectant mothers: Minus 3.5% it was 75% of assessed need.

FAMILY PLANNING

 Oral pills: Total free distribution and social marketing included. While it was estimated that 120,551,000 couples would need oral pills,the achieved target was 37,62,072 minus 52% compared to 2007-08.

 Sterilisation by vasectomy: Increased 5%.

 Use of intra uterine devices: 50,41,707 couples used IUDs minus 11.2% compared to previous year.

 Condom use: Minus 61.7%. While 1,68,84,577 condoms were distributed and socially marketed in 2007-08,it was 64,64,213 in 2008-09.
