There are some films that can work only in animation, like Cloudy…. But for films to work in any kind of medium, they have to connect at some level. And Cloudy…, for all the goodies it rains, for all its misfit characters, and even a monkey that can read thoughts, doesn’t.
As goodies from cheese burgers to spaghetti keep showering down, apparently converted from water in the clouds by a machine, you can’t help cringing about all that’s getting wasted. There are nods to the excessive binging on junk food in this film based on a children’s book by the same name, but there is no real effort to put that message across. Even the 3-D effects are wasted. Do you really want to see a man inside a live chicken hurling at you from outer space?
