Taking a cue from the Mandal Commission report which in effect redrew the political equations in the country, various Muslim groups and regional Muslim political parties are meeting here to create a joint national platform to “see the implementation of Sachar Committee Report at its right earnest”.
An Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) initiative, the meeting will be held here in the second week of January. League president GM Banatwala has been given charge of the meeting, along with Minister of State for Overseas Affairs E Ahmed.
The party, based mainly in Kerala, is understood to be in touch with all Muslim MLAs and MPs in the country, besides various Muslim bodies, including the Muslim Personal Law Board.
What adds significance to the meeting is the long political tradition of IUML. The League, which has been trying to expand its territories, is using the Sachar Committee Report to fulfil its ambition of becoming a national voice of the Muslims across the country.
“The finding in the Sachar Committee report once again proves that Muslims are not getting their due, whether in the field of education, employment or even in the finance sector. It’s high time that all like-minded people joined a common platform to set the things right,” said ET Muhammed Basheer, IUML secretary.
According to him, the state of Muslims in Kerala is much better than that in the rest of the country. Even the Sachar Committee had said nice words about the state of affairs of Muslims in the country, he pointed out.
