  • On a day that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was attending, the 30th general session of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind on Tuesday sparked off a controversy when one of the 25 resolutions passed by it asked Muslims not to recite the Vande Mataram, on the grounds that some verses of the national song are against the tenets of Islam.

“The fatwa of Darul Uloom (opposing recitation of the Vande Mataram) is correct,” said the resolution passed on Tuesday, referring to an edict passed in 2006 describing singing of the national song as anti-Islamic. Over 10,000 clerics from across the country adopted the resolution.

Criticising the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, the BJP has questioned the presence of Chidambaram at the function “after the resolution had been passed” as well as his failure to speak out against it.

While former BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi said the resolution against Vande Mataram was “against Constitutional provisions”, its Muslim face and party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Chidambaram’s silence was “a matter of concern”. The party said by keeping quiet, the Home Minister had legitimised the resolution.

The Jamiat resolution refers to a judgment of the Supreme Court “clearly stating that nobody can be compelled to sing the Vande Mataram”.

“Patriotism does not require singing of the Vande Mataram. We love our country and have proved this several times, but Vande Mataram violates our faith in monotheism that is the foundation of Islam,” the resolution said.

“We love and respect the mother, but do not worship her... The house demands that the issue of Vande Mataram should not be deliberately raised for causing communal discord and threat to law and order.”

    ... contd.

Patriotism hurtBy: Deb | 05-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If Vande Mataram is not sung by a community then that amounts to showing disrespect to the nation. This shows how these people are trying to create rifts between people who adhere to the faith of nationality and people who do not.Christinaity is also a monotheistic religion and it also primarily goes against any sort of idol worship. But Christians didn,t show any dissent against the national song.People who would speak or decline from singing our national song should be expelled from this country because of their unpatriotic nature.Islamists over thyears thathey hate this very system of democracy or multiculturalism which all other faiths have accepted to live in. Their very rigid nature and overall backwardness and along with few of our politicians countinously ignoring their misdeeds only to appease them will eventually prove to be detrimental for this country.
Mr. A.R. REHMAN composed music for this song... Just a songBy: Raj | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward His music added another dimension to it. These politicians are adopting Divide and Rule policy. They create problem for people of this nation, create problem with people of neighboring nations like Pakistan and China. They have no means to create Peace and Progress. They can not win in their own country, who will listen to them in foreign soil. DO not listen to them my friends.
Vande MataramBy: Gouri | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward This is simply a non issue which is projected as an issue. Nobody is bothered who is pronouncing VANDE MATARAM or not. The glory of VANDE MATARAM never diminishes. Linking VANDE MATARAM with religious sentiments is a profitable business for the Congress, CPIM, CPI and BJP who have proved that end always matters for them, not the means.
Great Fatwa...By: Abdul Raafi | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Really its Great Fatwa.....Every Muslims should be very cleat about this....I expect more fatwa like this......
Need Action, not words.By: Dusty Jasad | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Love for the nation is action "DOING". Not singing or talking. I had a teacher is school who beat the Muslims boys black and blue for not singing Vande Mataram in the moring assembly. In end he was caught and convicted of leaking exam papers in return for money.
