The Mercedes car impounded by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) two weeks ago and lying covered in its Delhi zonal unit has established the link between the Volcker investigations and Chetan Gupta, proprieter of the R L Group of Companies, who had been raided and questioned by ED sleuths in June.
Gupta’s involvement in the Volcker case was first reported by The Indian Express and the businessman is understood to have given a testimony to the ED that the second-hand Mercedes was purchased by him on behalf of Jagat Singh.
The ED’s case is that the proceeds from the oil-for-food coupons went into the purchase of the car which had been used by Jagat Singh for the past two years.
Officials maintained that the car had been impounded by them since it has significant evidentiary value and that the Mercedes link will be elaborated upon in the show-cause notices shortly to be dispatched by them under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
While Chetan Gupta, contacted by The Indian Express said he had no comments to offer, Jagat Singh said, ‘‘The car does not belong to me and if it belongs to Chetan Gupta, it has no bearings on the Volcker investigations and is nobody’s business. The ED will have to come up with documentary evidence to prove that the Mercedes link actually exists.’’
Jagat also alleged that he had faced a barrage of ‘‘irrelevant’’ questioning at the ED headquarters these past few months. ‘‘First, they wanted to link me to Coburg and even went to the Serious Fraud Office in London to try and make out a criminal case against me. But if Justice Pathak hasn’t revealed a money trail linked to me, how will the ED?’’ he asked
