Jaguar dealership in wishlist of Raja aide,Radia tells CBI

R K Chandolia is also alleged to have sought a job for someone at Tata Consultancy Services.

From evincing interest in a Jaguar car dealership to a platform for Kalaignar TV on Tata Sky to a job with Tata Consultancy Services. These were some of the many favours that R K Chandolia, personal secretary to then Telecom Minister A Raja, sought from the Tatas during his conversations with her, corporate lobbyist Niira Radia has claimed in her statement to the CBI.

The Radia statement, recorded under Section 161 of CrPC before the CBI,forms part of the chargesheet filed by the agency in the 2G spectrum case.

“The conversations… were regarding putting the efforts of bringing the Kalaignar TV on Tata Sky platform and their pending application with Tata Communications for allocation of transponder bandwidth… the reference to “boss” in the conversation means Raja,” Radia said in her statement.

“I also had a conversation in this regard with Raja,he was just asking me to put my efforts for getting the above expedited with Tata Sky and Tata Communications… Kalaignar TV during that time was not put on the Tata Sky platform due to paucity of space,” she said.

Chandolia is alleged to have sought a job for someone at TCS. “The matter pertains to the biodata of two persons provided by Chandolia to me. One was for transfer of an employee already working with TCS from India to UK or USA and another was for making efforts for a job in TCS. I was explaining to him about the economic down scenario in UK in those days… was not possible for getting a person transferred from India to London or US due to the economic recession… neither the job was given to the candidate nor was the other transferred,” Radia said in her statement to the CBI.

Chandolia,as per the statement, evinced interest in a Jaguar dealership. “Chandolia was asking to explore the dealership of Jaguar. Jaguar Cars, which was taken over by Tata Group worldwide, was being launched in India very soon,” Radia said.

The request for a platform for Kalaignar TV also surfaced in a conversation on the day the spectrum was being released. “Chandolia informed me that they are releasing four states today on which I told him that “o,don’t do that”… my reaction meant that they are releasing to others (telecom operators) and not Tatas… however, there had been a request from the Minister’s office for Tata Sky to host Kalaignar TV on its platform… I said that I am going to Mumbai and they are sending an agreement. It could be for this.”

She also refers to a phone conversation she had with Raja’s secretary Rajan. “He conveyed that I talk to Raja over his mobile phone and also gave me the number. I do not remember if I called him or not. Or if I did so,I do not remember the context.”

The statement mentions a conversation with Chandolia for arranging a meeting between Raja and Srinath,MD,Tata Telecommunications, which was eventually held at the minister’s residence the next day.
