Lokpal: Jail bharo begins,virtually

Of the 31,391 registrations until Friday evening,3,585 people are from Delhi.

To mobilise support for its proposed Jail Bharo agitation over the Lokpal Bill,India Against Corruption,which has been spearheading Team Anna’s campaign,has gone online with http://www.jailchalo.com. And if the registrations at the site are anything to go by,Delhi,the site of the last two Lokpal agitation,remains the city of the most ardent jail-goers.

Of the 31,391 registrations until Friday evening,3,585 people are from Delhi. The number of registrations from NCR total 5,160 with the majority from Faridabad,Gurgaon and Noida. There is only one registration from Uttarakhand,the state whose Lok Ayukta Bill earned rave reviews from Hazare and his aides.

So far,the response from Mumbai,the seat of their next phase of agitation,has been tepid. Unlike the enthusiasm of the NCR,Mumbai has had only 2,584 registrations. This includes one person who registered under the option “I don’t want to go to jail,please thank you.”

The Jail Bharo agitation will take place during the New Year weekend,starting from December 30 and ending on January 1.

The northeastern states remain lukewarm,with Arunachal not figuring in the list.
