Jaish-e-Mohammad posters ask village chiefs to resign

Two months after unauthenticated Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) posters asked panchs and sarpanchs to resign, similar instructions have come from Jaish-e-Mohammad now.

The threat posters pasted in Shopian district of south Kashmir have scared the elected representatives of villages in the Valley. The posters allegedly posted by Jaish-e-Mohammad have asked them to resign or face dire consequences.

Hours after the posters appeared, unidentified militants opened fire on the house of Mohammad Sidiq Bhat, 45, the 'numberdar' of Gobbal village in neighboring Kulgam district. The numberdar escaped unhurt.

The threat posters by LeT had appeared in April this year after which scores of sarpanchs expressed dissociation from the panchayats.

Shopian Superintendent of Police Muzaffar Ahmad said they had received information regarding the posters and started investigations.

On Thursday, Director General of Police K Rajendra reviewed security for panchs and sarpanchs in south Kashmir following the circulation of posters.
