The Bhartiya Janata Party has termed the detention of its candidate Varun Gandhi under National Security Act a vindictive move by the Mayawati government.
It is political vendetta and is disproportionate to the allegations levelled against Varun under the Indian Penal Code, said party general secretary and all India party poll in-charge Arun Jaitely. The public was angry and if the state government does not withdraw it,the ruling party will have to pay heavily for this in this election, he added. Jaitely was in Lucknow on Saturday to launch the Friends of BJP programme in UP through which the party is trying to attract the youths.
He claimed by invoking the NSA against Varun,Mayawati administration has set a wrong precedent against which Maneka Gandhis anger is justified. He also said the people of UP have seen misrule of both the SP and BSP governments. UP has never had such corrupt governments. Corruption,caste-based politics and atrocities on political opponents have dominated the state, he added.
He admitted the BJP was trying to revive its base in the state and said the party was trying to provide an alternative government in UP. In the LS polls, which the party is contesting with its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and JD(U),it expects to emerge as a frontrunner. He also attacked the Congress and said since the party had been weak in the state,it always tried to tag along with either the SP or the BSP.
Ridiculing the new alliance of Mulayam Singh Yadav,Lalu Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan,Jaitely said: They are allies but there is no alliance among them. All these alliances merely want to become the part of the next government and no one is talking about issues.
