Jaitley: PM is CEO,owner is someone else

Continuing the BJP’s attack on the government,Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley on Tuesday compared the UPA regime with a corporate house in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was acting like a CEO taking orders from the proprietor of the company.

He said while addressing a party convention here that the ruling dispensation suffered from structural contradictions. “The structure of the government is rare in the whole world. In any democratic country, the Prime Minister is the leader of the country. Here you are running the show on the structure of a private company. You have a professional CEO and the owner is somebody else,” said Jaitley.

“There is no power with the leadership of the government,” he said, adding,“There is office but no authority. There is another leadership who has power but no accountability. And that is why this leadership keeps itself away from the responsibilities as per convenience.”

The general refrain of the Prime Minister during any controversy, according to him,was that he was not aware. However,in the present arrangement,“a Gandhi can never commit a mistake”. The blame for any mistake was always put on others and it is argued that the family is very angry. The Prime Minister,in his view, was getting invisible.

Regarding the handling of the Ramdev agitation,he said the government seemed to have two views — one favouring a political settlement with the Baba through talks and the other advocating use of force. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who went to the airport, advocated a settlement,he said. Jaitley described the Prime Minister’s statement about the entire episode as most unfortunate and sought to know what rationale was there for the use of force.

He criticised the refusal of permission to Anna Hazare to protest at Jantar Mantar and said it amounted to a denial of democratic rights to people.
