The state Jal Nigam is chalking out a project to reduce carbon emission from the proposed sewerage treatment plant (STP) to be set up in Bharwara and earn credits by using methane emission for generation of electricity.

Currently in the process of hiring a consultant for the same, the Jal Nigam aims to earn revenue to the tune of around Rs 3 crore on a yearly basis by selling carbon credits earned through the process.

“We have studied the Chennai model. It has helped them in earning carbon credits and earn revenue to the tune of around Rs 6 crores in a year,” AK Shrivastava,Managing Director,Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam. “We plan to implement the same here as well. Once it is successfully implemented in the Bharwara model,we will extend it to other STPs,” he said.

“We are presently in the process of hiring a consultant for the project and seek the approval of the government,” added Shrivastava.

The Chennai model is functional in four places — Kodangaiyur,Koyambedu,Nesapakkam and Perungudi.

The STPs generates around 41,000 kw of electricty in a day. “The capacity of the Bharwara STP will be to treat sewerage to the tune of 345 million litre daily. Two gas engines of 800 kw capacity will be installed for the conversion of methane gas into electricty which will be around 1.5 mw per day once the Bharwara STP is completed by December,” said a senior Jal Nigam official.

According to the official, this will help them cut carbon dioxide emissions to the tune of 138 tonne daily. For every tonne emission checked, they will be entitled to get one carbon credit which is now selling at 12 dollars. The income will help them take care of more than half the cost of maintenance of the plant which is estimated to be Rs 5 crore annually.
