After local residents,who have been protesting against the seepage of dirty water from Kala Sanghia drain into their villages,warned to block the drain on February 22,the district administration called a meeting on Friday morning and requested the people and environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal to give them time till March 31.
Deputy Commissioner A S Pannu conducted the meeting at district administrative complex which was attended by Jalandhar Muncipal Corporation Commissioner Vinay Bablani,Punjab Pollution Control Board officials,industry representatives,Baba Seechewal and local residents.
Baba Seechewal accused the authorities to ignore the problems of people and said it seemed the government has got a licence of killing people by forcing them to live in highly polluted conditions.
Pannu asked the MC and the PPCB to get the work done soon and prevent the discharge of waste into the drain.
He gave a deadline to all the departments till March 31 and said the effluent treatment plant at Leather Complex would be completed by March.
Thousands of residents of 19 villages around the drain have been living in toxic conditions as their land,water and crops have developed toxicity due to flow of dirty water into their villages. Many residents are suffering from the scabies,jaundice,skin cancer and eye diseases.
The drain is about 80 km long and goes into Sutlej river and people in Malwa drink its water.
