The monsoon showers might not be very heavy in Delhi, but it does rain some misery on the Capital every year. Anyone who was trying to get back home on Wednesday will vouch for this fact.
With many roads inundated following the intermittent rains that lashed the city over the past 48 hours, most main roads were choked with traffic jams that showed no signs of clearing till late at night. Commuters who left office at dusk were stuck on the roads even around 10 pm.
To make matters worse,a stretch of the road at Sri Aurobindo Marg caved in leading to a jam which went well beyond AIIMS. The traffic from AIIMS to IIT is not moving because of the cave-in caused by construction undertaken by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The road is jammed from both sides, said a traffic official. However, senior Traffic Department officials said the DMRC has assured that the road will be repaired by morning.
Meanwhile, major jams were reported from Dhaula Kaun to Naraina as well. The traffic movement is very slow, said the official. With most traffic signals going on the blink, traffic personnel were posted at major traffic signals to regulate the flow of vehicles. Teen Murti, the road from Maharani Bagh to Moti Bagh,Shanti Path,Vasant Vihar,Ashram,Ridge Road and even Race Course Road were blocked late into the evening. But there were complaints from some areas that the traffic cops were nowhere to be seen.
It is insane. I have been stuck for over an hour now, said Himani Gupta,a commuter. There appears to be no reason for the jams. The cops are there and the lights are working. It is basically due to the mismanagement, complained Mohit, who was stuck on a South Delhi road for over an hour. The Commonwealth Games are just round the corner. What will the authorities do when something like this happens then? said another commuter.
Water-logging and jams were also reported from Anderiya Mod,Yousuf Sarai and Green Park, all roads leading to Gurgaon. There were jams in Patel Nagar,Lajpat Nagar and all across the Ring Road.
The city received 12.8 mm of rainfall between 4 and 6 pm on Wednesday. In the two days since monsoon hit North India,Delhi has recorded 107.8 mm of rain,an increase of 10 per cent, said the Met department.
