  • Bhartiya Janata Party leader Jaswant Singh's bold reinterpretation of Mohammed Ali Jinnah--his book on the founder of Pakistan is being launched on Monday--is bound to create controversy in both India and Pakistan.

On the face of it, it would seem futile to reapportion the political blame for the Great Partition of 1947. Yet, the renewed controversy over Jinnah could help us rethink the future of Indo-Pak relations.

No amount of blood-letting and political quibbling will alter our past. But we owe it to ourselves to overcome the many bitter consequences of the Partition. It is in this context that Jinnah's frequent invocation of the 'Monroe Doctrine' is of some interest.

The 'Monroe Doctrine', of course, is about the US foreign policy aspirations in the 19th century, when it sought to minimize the influence of European powers in the Western hemisphere. Jinnah visualized that after Partition, India and Pakistan could declare some kind of a Monroe Doctrine that would prevent the great powers from intervening in post-colonial Subcontinent.

In an interview to a European newspaper in early 1948, Jinnah discussed broadly his idea of how he wanted India and Pakistan to relate to each other and the world. "Our own paramount interests demand that the Dominion

of Pakistan and the Dominion of India should co-ordinate for the purpose of playing their part in international affairs. It is of vital importance to Pakistan and India as independent sovereign states to collaborate in a friendly way to jointly defend their frontiers both on land and sea against any aggression. But this depends entirely on whether Pakistan and India can resolve their own differences," Jinnah said.

Jinnah, Jawahar and JaswantBy: Anil Gupta | 20-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Sir, Nobody in India will ever accept the theory that Jinnah was secular or he was not responsible for creation of Pakistan. Although the word Pakistan was coined by a student Chaudhary Rehmat Ali at Cambridge who defined it as P for Punjab,A for Assam, K for Kashmir, S for Sindh and Tan for Balochistan.Jinnah adopted it after he was declined power sharing by Nehru. But ultimately, it was accepted by Nehru after a three hour in-camera meeting with Edwina Mountbatten who was specially sent to him due to her proximity to Nehru. This is recforded in detail by Philip Jeigler, official biographer of Moutbatten.Ther were many other characters in the drama like Sir Syed Ahmad who prepared the ground by asserting that Hindus and Muslims were two distinct qaums (nations). Jaswant in order to become liberal face of BJP committed the harakiri. He forgot that being a politician he should have exercised discretion which is always regarded as a better part of valour.
Not Rational EnoughBy: Prasad | 20-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Though the Authors concepts in theory looks right, but, I think, it’s time for us to be rational for our own good. I guess, this whole Idea for being patient, for over 60 years has only made us to take pain grief and death of our fellow Indians. I think, it is imperative that we should take strong stand against our neighbors who have always caused us pain and created issues (look at the issues being created with fake currencies, now). Strong Diplomatic steps are of extreme importance to bring confidence in Indian citizens. I think, it is only ridiculous and waste of time to offer friendly handshakes with them. While, the intervention of armed forces, should be our last choice, but we should continue to showcase, that we are ready for it. For some political reasons, this govt fails to instill this confidence. We are become the audience of political needs and its witchful needs. The value towards the pain caused, unfortunately, is just the way of life!!
