The Jathedar, who was testing the waters for next year’s Assembly polls from Dharamkot by fielding Gurmail, had put a lot at stake by even inviting Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal to campaign.

“These SGPC elections are not just between SAD (B) and Panthic Morcha and others but also among themselves. At many places SAD (B) candidates were fighting their own party members, who had put on other fronts. All this will count when Vidha Sabha tickets are distributed,” a senior Akali leader said.

Kaka claimed that by denying him the ticket, the party had forced him to fight the elections as an independent. “I have proved myself and am also highly indebted to the people of Dharamkot,” he said.

Before the elections, there were many an attempts to bring Kaka back into the party fold. Sukhbir had even called him for a meeting during one of his visits to Moga.
