Suspended bureaucrat C Umashankar on Wednesday found support from unexpected quarters when Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa took up his case to attack the state government and the Chief Ministers family, charging that the Dalit officer was being hounded for his honesty.
Backing the officials own contention,Jaya said that the suspension on the pretext that Umashankar had entered the Civil Services using a bogus community certificate smacks of victimisation,as all such appointments, she said, were vetted by the UPSC after verifying all the certificates submitted by the applicants.
Recalling the incidents that led to the estrangement of Maran brothers from the Karunanidhi family and the party,Jaya,in a statement, alleged that CM M Karunanidhi announced the formation of Arasu Cable TV Corporation ostensibly to provide cable TV connections to the people at reasonable rates, but in reality to pose a challenge to the Maran brothers Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV). She further said that Umashankar was appointed Managing Director of the corporation with a specific mandate from Karunanidhi to eliminate SCV.
However, after the warring cousins of the Karunanidhi family struck a sudden agreement, the official was made a scapegoat and shunted out of the corporation, the company itself became dysfunctional and the crores of public money invested in the venture was wasted, alleged Jaya.
