Jaya govt arrests Stalin,DMK leaders from protest march

DMK leaders were protesting land-grabbing charges against them after Jaya put several behind bars.

Former Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin was arrested on Monday along with scores of party members while protesting charges of land-grabbing slapped on them by the ruling AIADMK govt.

Senior leaders coordinating the protests in districts were also detained.

Stalin,the son of DMK president M Karunanidhi,was arrested for staging protest in defiance of prohibitory orders,police said.

DMK workers led by party treasurer Stalin held state-wide demonstrations on Monday accusing the AIADMK government of “foisting” cases on partymen. Protests were held in many parts of the state with partymen taking to streets to register their anger.

DMK has been facing the heat of land-grab charges with most of its well-known faces such as Salem strongman and former Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam,Chepauk constituency MLA J Anbazhagan and close aides of Union Minister M K Alagiri,already lodged behind bars in this connection.

Party president M Karunanidhi has said Jayalalithaa had unleashed “vendetta politics” on the DMK with the intention of wreaking vengeance.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa had promised voters during the Assembly polls that she would take action against land-grabbing during the DMK rule.

A special cell has been formed by the police to exclusively deal with land grabbing cases. DMK senior leader Veerapandi S Arumugam,Chepauk constituency MLA J Anbazhagan and close aides of Union Minister M K Alagiri,are all in prison.

More than 5,000 DMK workers including former minister M Palachisamy and M P Saminathan were held at Coimbatore,Tiruvallur,Tiruppur and Cuddalore.
