When 29-year-old Ashok Gaikwad was assaulted by an alleged aide of gangster D K Rao two weeks ago, the Powai police had initialy probed an extortion angle. However, after arresting the accused, Siddharth Bansode, the police learnt that it was jealousy that had led Bansode to attack Gaikwad. The duo has grown up in the same neighbourhood in Powai. But while Gaikwad has risen up the social ladder and bought a car and a flat , Bansode extorted money using D K Rao’s name. “On November 1, when Gaikwad had come to Powai to get his car repaired, he saw Bansode with a few youths consuming alochol. Gaikwad advised Bansode to have a decent life. Enraged at this, Bansode and friends assaulted him with a chopper,,” said Senior Police Inspector R Rupawate.
