A jeweller was stabbed and robbed by unidentified persons at his shop in Kasarwadi on Monday. The victim, identified as Narendrakumar Champalal Jain (42), is a resident of Parshwanath society in Kasarwadi.

Police said the victim was admitted to the Aditya Birla Hospital in Thergaon as he suffered several injuries on face, hands and other body parts. His situation was, however, reported to be stable. Police said the value of jewellery stolen was not known till reports last came in.

Jain is an owner of Ramesh Jewellers at Pawar Chawl in Kasdarwadi. Around 3 pm, two unidentified men came to the shop and attacked him with weapons and fled after closing the door of the shop. On seeing the door of the shop closed, local residents sensed something wrong and checked into the shop only to find Jain lying in a pool of blood, police said.

They informed the police control room following which police rushed Jain to YCM Hospital from where he shifted to Aditya Birla Hospital.

Senior police officers, including deputy commissioner (Zone III) Shahji Umap, assistant commissioner (crime) Vinod Satav, inspectors Sudhir Aspat, Mohan Vidhate, visited the crime scene for investigation. The dog squad was also pressed into service to get clues about the assailants. The sniffer dog guided the police to Kasarwadi railway station to trace the assailants.

Police, who found a gold chain at the crime scene, are probing whether robbery or any dispute over financial matters was the cause of crime. The assailants are believed to be aged between 25 and 30 years.

Police said Jain's daughter had visited the shop about half an hour before the incident took place. She reportedly saw a man at the shop inquiring about mortgaging a gold chain. "The process of lodging a complaint is on. Investigation is on to confirm the cause of attack and the amount of valuables stolen," said DCP Umap.
