Jewellers to help fund elephant corridors

Chairman of Wildlife Trust of India M K Ranjitsinh on Thursday said an audit system would be introduced soon to check on the land purchased by them and given to the forest department to create safe corridors for Asian elephants.

Chairman of Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) M K Ranjitsinh on Thursday said an audit system would be introduced soon to check on the land purchased by them and given to the forest department to create safe corridors for Asian elephants. He admitted they was no system in place for the same at present.

Ranjitsinh was addressing the media along with leading jewellry designers from Vadodara about their joint initiative to create a safe passage for elephants in India.

On October 14,Sothebys will auction a collection of jewellry at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai and a percentage of profits will be set aside for the World Land Trusts Elephant Corridor project. In Gujarat,Narayan Jewellers has been chosen to design the jewellry.

An survey across India conducted by the WTI has identified 88 corridors for elephant movement. The WTI,along with World Land Trust,has now set about securing these corridors in Uttarakhand,Kerala and Meghalaya.

Since acquiring land was a tough task,it was decided to purchase the land crucial for the corridor. So far,we have not come across any problems about the land we have handed over to the forest department. But we will soon have a system of monitoring of the land given for corridors for elephants, Ranjitsinh said.
