Jharkhand job ‘scam’: SC allows salaries for officials

In a major reprieve for more than 150 civil services officers working in Jharkhand since 2008, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the operation of the state High Court order, which had restrained them from holding their offices and drawing salaries in the wake of the CBI probe into the "tainted" competitive exam.

"We have heard learned counsel for the parties on the prayer for interim relief and we direct that para 62 of the impugned order the High Court insofar it directs that the candidates selected in the 2nd Combined Civil Services Examination will not be allowed to work and draw their salary, shall remain stayed," said a Bench of Justices A K Patnaik and Madan B Lokur. But the court refrained from interfering with the HC's directive ordering a CBI probe into the affairs of the Jharkhand Public Service Examination (JPSC).

Appearing for one of the petitioners, senior advocate Amarendra Sharan dubbed the HC directive as one without jurisdiction. "These officers are being punished without being held guilty since no inquiry has damned them till date," he argued.
