The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that dates for Assembly elections in Jharkhand, which is at present under President’s rule, would be soon notified. Attorney General G E Vahanvati told a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and B S Chauhan that the Chief Election Commissioner had spoken to him and assured him in this regard.

However, the counsel for the BJP’s Jharkhand unit spokesman whose petition the apex court was hearing, questioned the Attorney General’s claim and submitted that the election dates could not be notified unless the Assembly was dissolved. He said the Assembly was deliberately kept under suspended animation rather than being dissolved, which could have facilitated the conduct of polls.

The apex court, however, posted the matter for further hearing after two weeks.

The petition filed by Sanjay Seth sought directions to the Centre to immediately dissolve the Assembly and announce the elections.

The House was kept under suspended animation after Shibu Soren resigned as CM after losing the Assembly byelection and there was no clear majority for any party.
