  • Ending months of uncertainty, the Election Commission on Friday announced the schedule for holding elections to the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly.

The state has been under President’s Rule since February 19 after the then chief minister, Shibu Soren, resigned when he failed in his attempt to enter the Assembly in the by-election to Tamar Assembly seat.

Announcing the plan to hold elections in five phases, beginning November 27, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Navin Chawla said voting would be held on November 27, December 2, 8, 12 and 18. Counting of votes would be held on December 23.

The Union Cabinet had on Thursday approved dissolution of the Assembly, paving the way for elections to be held. Ever since the imposition of President’s Rule, the Assembly was in a state of suspended animation.

According to EC sources, the Commission’s decision to hold elections was taken after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s recent visit to the state, where he also reviewed the state’s preparedness to hold elections and launch a coordinated offensive against Naxals.

“The Home Ministry has accepted our demand for adequate security forces to ensure that elections can be conducted without any threat of violence from the Naxals or other elements,” said a senior EC official.

Chawla told reporters that the model code of conduct came into force immediately.

The Opposition BJP has been opposed to continuation of President’s Rule, alleging that by not holding the Assembly elections, the Union government was trying to rule the state by proxy. It has even filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the President’s Rule and seeking fresh elections.

BJP: time for some real politicsBy: Nitin Mathur | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward BJP is the party which had gone to SC to question dragging on of the emergency. The dates of the elections are such that they still leave 2-3 weeks before Rajnath may be asked to call quits. If BJP is the actual President he should immediately ask all Jharkhand stake holders to change gears and prepare for the elections. BJP had formed an earlier Govt. in Jharkhand. It should sit down and check how the opposition is placed. Is JMM still a force after the ex-chief minister was held guilty. Does BJP need JD or is it better to go alone, is a question to look at. Is Congress the party to challenge, or will there be RJD-Cong Alliance, BJP should carefully evaluate the options and then see. And in addition check how much influence JMM still commands. Jharkand needs Progress and peace. can BJP articulate a Jharkand package. Can Yashwant, Rudy, Prasad, who understand the issues best, raise their hands and contribute. Let good people get tickets and go all out.
“5 Phases”, Faces of “555”, “Players” By: George P. Joseph | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward At every time, Election Commission has proved its loyalty to the Political Party that they hold interest, though a general conception is in the air that the Election Commission is free from every bias, partiality, and so on. The modern trend of gimmicks of electioneering within a span is always entertained by all the Political Parties, though, sometimes they express some objections, are interested to seize the votes within the time they got as per the time table of the Election, after scanning the trend and scenario prevails in the State. These pandemonium are worthless and no gain to the people just to claim more taxes on behalf of election prodigal accountability. Nehru's conception of Election is with immediate effect and in time frame to finish the process continuously without any gap.
TO HELL WITH BJP AND ITS SUPPORTERSBy: Vasudevan | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Better BJP wins as otherwise they and their supporters will start blaming the EVMs once again. I do not think anybody with a level of sense will take into their allegation of rigging of EVMs. If EVMs are rigged as alleged by them, how did the BJP manage to win Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh assembly elections recently. Right from 2004 to 2009, the BJP had a string of victories in many assembly elections. Similarly in the Lok sabha poll, the BJP and its alliance did very well in Karnataka, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh etc. How this was possible ?? These clearly proves that all their allegations are bogus and just raised to vent their frustration at such a nerve shattering loss.
POOR LOSERSBy: R Sundar | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward BJP should win this poll by hook or crook as otherwise they would once again start crying and blame the hacking of EVMs for their defeat. Their shameless supporters too would endorse their ridiculous claim by offering frivolous explanations. All in all a set of poor losers.
