A 21-year-old man committed suicide in the Preet Vihar area around 9 pm on Saturday, allegedly because the girl he wanted to marry loved someone else and refused to marry him.
Moninder Singh allegedly abused his mother and younger brother, and thrashed them before asking them to leave their one-room house. His mother, Palvinder Kaur, told the police that she and her younger son left the home without much protest. “He was depressed and we thought it would not be right to argue with him and went to my sister’s home in Kalkaji,” Kaur told the police.
Singh’s mother has been living separately from her husband for 17 years, and they are involved in a dispute. Kaur and her son returned home on Sunday after they were informed of Moninder’s death.
Singh worked at a call centre in Noida; the girl he wanted to marry also worked there.
The police said the two grew close but the girl soon wanted out of the relationship. “Even marriage had been discussed by their families but the girl didn’t want to marry Moninder,” a police officer said.
“After her refusal, my son went into a depression and would not talk for days and would cry often,” Kaur told the police. In January, the girl even registered a complaint in the Preet Vihar police station against Singh, saying he was harassing her.
Singh soon quit his job. “I had been urging him to see a doctor but he kept avoiding it and said he was fine,” his mother told the police.
