Jilted lover gets 3 yrs in jail for setting on fire ex-girlfriend's house

A "jilted lover" who had set his ex-girlfriend's parents' house on fire has been sentenced to three years in jail by a Delhi court which said the man had committed the crime to "take revenge" against the brother of the girl as he had "snapped" their relationship.

Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat handed down the jail term to Delhi resident Raj Kumar, saying the girl's brother was opposed to the relationship between his sister and the convict who "indulged himself into such criminal act" to teach a lesson to the girl's family.

"The convict appears to be a jilted lover whose love relation with the sister of the complainant (Gaurav Kumar) got snapped by him (Gaurav), who was opposed to it.

"In order to take revenge against Gaurav, the convict had barged into the first floor of the girl's house and set on fire the room in which Gaurav and his wife were sleeping," the court said, imposing a cost of Rs 15,000 on the convict.

Raj was arrested by the police on the compliant lodged by Gaurav, who had alleged that in April 2010, Raj had trespassed into their house and had doused a part of his room with kerosene oil.

The complainant, a native of south-west Delhi, had told the police that he woke up due to the smell of kerosene and had seen the convict lighting a match stick and throwing the same into his room through the window, which set the room on

fire.

He had further told the court that Raj had also bolted the door of his room from outside, which was opened by his parents, who had come to their rescue on hearing their cries.

During the trial, the counsel for the accused had told the court Raj was in love with the sister of the complainant, which was not to the liking of the complainant and, therefore, Gaurav had framed the accused in this false case.
