Jilted lover turns stalker, stabs classmate, kills self

In yet another crime of passion, a man attacked a girl with a knife and committed suicide at Chetna College in Bandra Saturday morning.

Police said the victim, Payal Balsave, and the deceased Nikhil Bankar were students of Bachelors in Management Studies at Chetna college and batchmates. They were in a relationship until Payal stopped talking to him as her parents did not approve of it, they said.

Police said Nikhil tried to convince her but she did not relent. He allegedly started harassing her, and she reported it to her uncle who filed a complaint with Kherwadi police. The matter was also reported to the college management, which warned Nikhil of strict action if he didn't stop the harrassment.

"On Saturday, Nikhil stabbed Payal with a knife on the face, neck and stomach and then stabbed himself in the neck and stomach," said Vishwas Nangre Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, West Region.

"They were rushed to Guru Nanak hospital in Bandra East where Nikhil succumbed to injuries. Payal's condition is critical," he added.

"We were walking to our classroom when, at the staircase Nikhil walked up and took something from his pocket and attacked Payal. Before we could do anything Nikhil had stabbed her several times after which he stabbed himself," said an eyewitness.

Nikhil son of a sales tax officer was a resident of Bandra and Payal lived in Kalina with her uncle and aunt. Her parents live in Mira Road.

The college claimed it had warned Nikhil and had called his parents to inform them of his behaviour.

"The girl and her parents complained he was troubling her. We called him and his parents and warned him of rustication if he continued to trouble her," said principal Dr S V Surnis.
