At least six Indian Americans, including Congressman Bobby Jindal (pictured) and seven State legislators were declared winners in the US mid-term polls.
Republican Jindal romped home with a sizeable margin in Louisiana. The only Indian American to be re-elected to the House of Representatives since Dalip Singh Saund in the 1960s, Jindal got more than 80 per cent of the total votes polled at a time of an anti-Republican wave. In Philadelphia, however, his Republican colleague Raj Bhakta was defeated by Democrat Allyson Schwartz.
In the states, all the three incumbent Indian-American legislators were re-elected with comfortable margins: the seasoned Kumar Barve in Maryland, Satveer Choudhary in Minnesota and Swati Dandekar in Iowa. For Choudhary, this victory marked the 10th anniversary as a legislator, while this is the third consecutive win for Dandekar.
Adding to the list are the two Goyals —Jay from Ohio and Raj from Kansas —who were declared winners for respective state legislatures in a tightly contested election. Democrat Saqib Ali, a Pakistani American, too entered the Maryland State legislature.
