JNNURM: States discuss problems facing them

The problems being faced by different states in implementation of projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission were discussed at a meeting of the officials of Punjab,Haryana,Jammu and Kashmir as well as Uttaranchal on Monday.

The problems being faced by different states in implementation of projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) were discussed at a meeting of the officials of Punjab,Haryana,Jammu and Kashmir as well as Uttaranchal on Monday.

The condition of the Central government of imposition of house tax in the states that have projects sanctioned under JNNURM was taken up. Most of the states were reluctant to impose house tax. In some states,the grants from the Centre for projects have been stalled. Officials say that for Chandigarh,funds have been sanctioned for the projects of the Municipal Corporation under JNNURM.

The issue of imposition of house tax has been in the news for some time with the Centre sending repeated reminders to the civic body asking for tax to be imposed. The elected representatives have,however,expressed reluctance on the issue.
