The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is probing a scandal in which it was reported that a pornographic MMS video clip was being circulated that featured two of its students.
Hindi daily Dainik Jagran reported on Monday that the video was shot inside a hostel room on the campus. The report said the sex film had been made with the intention of making money, but when that did not work out, it was made public and the MMS clip soon went viral. The daily said it had a copy of the CD that contained the clip.
JNU Registrar V K Jain said police officials had contacted the university security officer. He rejected allegations that the university had known about the matter all along.
"We are yet to receive a complaint, but have taken note of the matter. The Proctor's office will investigate," Jain said.
DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal said he was awaiting a report from the university. "We have asked for a factual report from the university, and will act after we receive a copy," he said.
H B Bohidar, JNU Chief Proctor, said the final probe report would be ready in a week.
"We started the inquiry last Monday after the security department alerted us. As of now, there are two boys who are suspects. One of them appears in the clip. There may be more students involved," Bohidar said.
The girl in the clip has left the campus. Bohidar said the inquiry committee believes the girl was not aware she was being filmed.
"We have questioned both boys as well as residents of the Tapti hostel, where they live, numerous times. We have also questioned some of the girl's acquaintances. We will be summoning them again. They are cooperating in the inquiry," Bohidar said, adding that the date and location of the filming could not be ascertained.
