JNU parties to address students ahead of elections

All central panel candidates, except those for the president's post, for Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union elections will get the opportunity to present their party's agenda to university students at the general body meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Candidates for the posts of vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary will get eight minutes each to put forth their vision.

Arguing for a "Left democratic alternative", SFI-JNU's candidate for joint secretary Ruchira Sen said one of their main demands is of an equal opportunity cell at JNU. The cell, she said, will check against discrimination of any kind on campus. "We are pitching for strengthening of the current EOC with elected student representatives," said Sen, who is a former member of JNU's gender sensitisation committee against sexual harassment.

AISA, which led the previous JNUSU, will be asking for students' support to allow it to further its initiatives of the previous term.

"AISA will intensify its struggle and will take concrete steps to fight Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations and reinstate the JNUSU constitution," said AISA's joint secretary nominee Piyush Raj.

He said after the all-organisation hunger strike in March this year, the administration had "agreed" in-principle to construct seven new hostels on the campus and AISA will work towards getting the project started.

The matter of ABVP's vice-presidential candidate remained unresolved even after their complaint to the grievance redressal cell.

"The election committee had on Saturday said that resignation from a dissolved unit was necessary for a candidate before filing nominations," ABVP general secretary Sandip Kumar said.

The organisation had written to the grievance redressal cell contesting the election committee's decision to disqualify its candidate.

Kumar said the JNUSU constitution or the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations do not call for a candidate's resignation after the earlier union has been dissolved.
