Bjp's Pune office-bearers have alleged that traffic wardens, instead of controlling traffic, are often found collecting fines from offenders. The wardens were appointed by the traffic police to man traffic; they are not allowed to fine offenders. The issue was raised by various groups earlier. The latest allegation comes after BJP office-bearers and workers recently caught a traffic warden collecting fine at the S P College chowk. The partys city unit vice president Sandeep Khardekar, city secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Sushil Mengde and city unit general secretary of the BJP students wing Deepak Pote have threatened to put up pictures of wardens collecting illegal fines at city junctions. Despite following up the matter for the last three months, the civic body and traffic police department are yet to define the duties of a traffic warden. Though these wardens have been appointed to help traffic police, instead of doing their duty of controlling the traffic flow, they are often found collecting fines from rule violators. There are 367 traffic wardens in the city and they are paid by the civic body through the tax payers money, Khardekar said.
